OK you forensics experts. I bought a boat/trailer combination from Ohio and moving it to PA. The trailer was not registered in ohio because the previous owner kept it in the boatyard and did not need to take it anywhere.
As expected this is going to be a pain in the a$$ but it is a magictilt trailer built in florida. The vin number is on a sticker. The sticker is there but just about everything is faded off of it. I called the maufacturer and they said the vin number is not stamped anywhere. Does anyone have any idea how to 'bring back' the faded vin number on this sticker?
I've looked at it from every angle and it just does not show anything. I had the same problem with a continental trailer i purchased from a guy in Maryland, had it shipped to Louisiana. I called Continental to see if they could make me another data plate/sticker.
They were of no help at ALL. I was able to register the trailer in La.
With no problems at all. As long as you have all paperwork i would think you are fine.
BUT, if he never registered the trailer, You will have to pay the original registration taxes on it. You need to have the buyer pay that.
Its happened to me before. And the buyer did agree to pay the past due taxes. No one should have to pay someone else's taxes!! The original owner of that trailer got a certificate of origin when he/she purchased it, whether it was registered or not. Go back to your seller and get that certificate if possible. Numbers on trailers are a real PITA since they're usually just a decal. If you can get the original numbers you can have them stamped or engraved on the trailer frame (which is far, far better than what it came with new).
Otherwise, if not able to get the above info you're going to your state's DMV and be following whatever procedures they have for this situation. Good luck, this sort of stuff, I.D. Numbers on nothing more than a decal, is why trailer thefts happen so often, and are rarely recovered. Thanks for all of your replies.
Mostly I was trying to figure out if there was some sort of ink or chemical or technique of bringing back the vin number on the sticker. It seems rediculous to me that the number should not be stamped on the trailer or at least stamped on a tag and attached to the trailer. Anyway, my notary says there still is a way to get it registered but it will cost money time and legwork. Apparently Pa is a pain in the ass state. I went through this before with a boat I restored that was sitting in a forest for 30 years. They told me the only way to get it registered was to find the owner from 1967 where it was last registered and have him send you the last registration.
Time bound higher grade fixation software. The boat had changed hands 3 or 4 times since then and the paper trail dissappeared. I finally was able to get numbers for it.
. 5687 Answers SOURCE: Different states have different laws. In states that charge trailer plates by Weight, you need to pull the Trailer over a scale and show the weight receipt. If the Boat has to stay on the trailer, pull both and subtract the weight of the boat from the total weight.
You can find the Boat weight online. In states that charge a flat fee for Trailer plates, its much simpler. You can also go to a Vehicle Registration center and get a form for the registration. But you need to call ahead to find out if Police or Highway Patrol can verify the Hull# or Trailer ID. Posted on Mar 17, 2010. Most boat trailers use a sticker that falls off for the info you are looking for, try looking on the inside (between rails) of the trailer its sometimes there not on the outside.
Many states DO NOT REQUIRE TRAILER TITLES. Check with your deputy registrar or license bureau. If you have an old registration cert. You can try those numbers, or the original mso or paperwork if not titled. As NOT ALL STATES REQUIRE TITLES check with your local license people. As said before most states allow home made titles to be issued. Since most boat trailers reach the dealer un-assembled that is why they use the sticker system, as the tounge or rails could be used on any one of the trailers the dealer orderd.
If you sell the trailer I would definately go thru the paper work as a form of protection for yourself to prove legal ownership Jan 17, 2012. I did same reciently for a Nolex 25.
Easiest is to measure and copy someone else's trailer. Would suggest putting boat on the hard, measure the width between mudguards on your trailer ( you want the boards as close to the guards as you can) halve your number, measure same out from centreline of yacht and up to hull from ground. Transpose measurements to trailer. Hardest part is guessing the correct balance point ( distance from centre of axles to winch) this is so much easier if you have one to copy.
Try to leave everything adjustable in order to tweak once your boat is on the trailer. Remember the centre rollers need to carry most of the weight, not the boards. Mar 28, 2010. Mar 06, 2010. If you are looking at the front of the trailer then where the trailer splits on the inside of the rail there will be a sticker that tells all of the information. If it is the trailer that came with the boat then the trailer will have been made by 'Karavan Trailers Inc.' The first digits of the trailer VIN will be 5KTBS. The numbers are not actually stamped anywhere on the trailer so if the stickers are missing then I suppose the DMV could issue and stamp a new VIN onto your trailer. If you do have the sticker and find a VIN then it is a good idea to stamp or engrave the VIN on the trailer itself incase the sticker falls off, wears out, and you want to sell it.
Oct 15, 2009. Float on style trailers are designed with immersions depths and vertical guides to allow the boat to be driven onto the trailer. But not at full throttle, only enough power to move the boat over the bottom rollers/guides. Some trailers are designed to have the boat winched onto the trailer. For this style, you drive to boat to a starting point and then use the winch to pull the boat the remaining distance. These sometimes have a release mechanism and hinge/pivot point to allow the back of the trailer to drop below the normal towing position to make recovery easier. As the boat is winched into position, the weight of the boat will cause the trailor to pivot and return to the towing position.
